AN UNDERCOVER sting has caught two shops selling booze to children.
Police mounted the operation after receiving information from members of the public at a meeting in Lupset on Monday night.
And on Wednesday night, under the supervision of officers from the Wakefield Central neighbourhood police team (NPT), two girls, aged 14 and 15, went to try to buy alcohol from Big in Booze, on Horbury Road, near Thornes Park, and Sainsburys at Jacksons, on Dewsbury Road and the junction of Townley Road.
Both stores sold the teenagers alcopops.
The NPT were tipped off about both shops after people living in the areas became frustrated with anti-social behaviour caused by roaming gangs of booze-fuelled youngsters.
Inspector Dave Peach of the Wakefield Central NPT said: "Community intelligence led this operation and has helped to stop the sale of alcohol to children.
"We are disappointed that these premises are selling alcohol to people under age. Being the holder of a licence to sell alcohol comes with an acceptance to confirm people's ages.
"The consequences were children were causing drunken anti-social behaviour to residents and we will not allow this to continue."
Fixed penalty notices of £80 were given to the people who sold the alcohol.
And police are working with the managers of both shops on a licensing review action plan.
Insp Peach said: "This information came from the community and we urge anyone else with problems or information to tell us."
Anyone with any information should contact the Wakefield Central NPT on 01924 293282 or on 0845 6060606.
