THE chains were officially handed over to the new Mayor of Wakefield this week – and a Wakefield Wildcats rugby star became consort to the deputy mayor.
Coun Jacqui Williams took over the robes from outgoing councillor and mayor Allan Garbutt at the annual mayor making ceremony at Wakefield's County Hall yesterday.

And her new deputy, Coun Heather Hudson, has chosen Wildcats star Adam Watene as her consort in a bid to boost the profile of the mayor's office and increase interest among youngsters.

Coun Williams, who has picked brain injury group Move Ahead as her chosen charity, said: "I will try to be an excellent ambassador for the district and for the council and strive to maintain the council's objectives and promote the democratic society in which we live."

Coun Hudson said she was excited about taking on the role of deputy alongside the Super League star and said: "My husband Clive and I have always been great friends with Adam since he came to Wakefield in 2005. Maybe with his help we can draw more young people into   politics."

Mr Watene added: "I am really happy to assist in any way I can. It's all very new for me, but clearly it will be opening new doors for both of us."

Darren Byford will be the mayor's official consort.
