A SINGLE mum hit a woman over the head with a glass bottle after she was pushed into a gaming machine.
Gemma Batley, 19, hit out after being pushed into a “bandit” on a night out in Wakefield city centre on Monday, April 7.
Wakefield magistrates heard victim Angela Purvis and friends were at the Exchange Bar when she became aware there might be som
e trouble.
She approached the person who she thought was the instigator and an argument broke out.
Batley, who was out with the other woman, intervened. The victim pushed Batley, who was also pushing, into the bandit.
Prosecutor Emma Trueman said: “Gemma Batley raised the glass bottle she was holding and hit Angela Purvis over the top of the head. The bottle didn’t break but it left a cut half an inch long. It needed treatment at hospital; it was glued.”
Batley, of Esther Grove, Lupset, pleaded guilty to assault.
Caroline Deacon, mitigating, said Batley had initially tried to sort out the problem but had been pushed. Batley accepted it was not self-defence and she had hit the victim with the bottle she had been drinking from.
The solicitor said the incident may never have happened if the groups had not been drinking. Batley has not gone out socially since the incident.
The court heard Batley had a 12-month old son and shared a home with his father. Batley was sentenced to 100 hours of community service and ordered to pay £100 compensation and £60 costs.
