AN ambitious crew is hoping these souped-up bangers will raise thousands for charity next month.
But the Thunderbirds look-alikes face a 3,000-mile round trip from Altofts to Benidorm and back.
Howard Roberts and his team of seven, named the Thunderburps, want to raise £5,000 for Wakefield Hospice and the Yorkshire Cancer Centre.
He said: “In some way each one of the team has friends or family that has been touched by the work of these charities. We’ve done a lot of work on the cars are really looking forward to it now.”
The team scoured eBay for their bangers, eventually picking up a three-wheeled Reliant Robin, which they transformed into Thunderburp 4, and a Toyota Previa which has become Thunderburp 2.
They will also dress up as Thunderbirds characters, with the 6ft 2ins, 18-stone Andrew Melvin cladding up as a FAB Lady Penelope.
Mr Roberts, of Byker Avenue, said the plan was hatched over a pint in the Horse and Jockey pub.
He added: “I’m not sure we’ll make it but we’re going to give it a good try.”
The team will set off on Wednesday, March 14.
