Wakefield singer Sophie May Williams sailed through to the next stage of The Voice UK tonight (Saturday).

The 17-year-old Outwood Grange Academy student took on Cherri Prince, 33, from London, in the battle round.

Rapper Will-i-am put Sophie through to the knockout stages after their performance of The Cure’s The Lovecats.

Sophie, from Wrenthorpe, said: “Cherri has such a gorgeous voice, I don’t know how I got through. This is the chance of a lifetime. The next stage is the knockouts and then the live rounds. It is so exciting but I am really nervous too.”
