A police officer was found hanging in the grounds of a school the day after being arrested, an inquest was told.

PC Kevin Andrew Ellis was arrested on Wednesday, April 17.

The body of the 33-year-old officer, of Carr Beck Drive, Whitwood, Castleford, was found a day later in the grounds of Rodillian Academy, in Lofthouse.

Coroner David Hinchliff told today’s hearing: “He was arrested on 17 April and was released on bail. He was being transported by a police officer to his parents’ address.

“As they approached the address he asked if he could be dropped off to walk the remaining part of the journey.

“At approximately 9.30pm an officer called at his parents’ address to conduct a welfare check.

“It transpired Mr Ellis had never arrived at the address.

“On 18 April he was discovered hanging in the grounds of Rodillian School, Lofthouse, Wakefield.

“Paramedics attended and confirmed his death at 12.55pm.”

Mr Hinchliff adjourned the hearing pending the outcome of further inquiries.

PC Ellis was based at Wood Street police station, in Wakefield, and was believed to have been a father of two.

The case has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
