A book of condolence for the Mayor of Wakefield, coun Brian Holmes, has been opened in Wakefield Cathedral.

Coun Holmes, who represented the Horbury and South Ossett ward, died last night aged 75.

The Dean of Wakefield, the Very Revd Jonathan Greener said: “All of us at the cathedral are extremely saddened to hear of the death of our mayor and our thoughts and prayers are with Janet and his family.

“He has been a great servant to Wakefield and will be much missed.

“We’ve opened a book of condolence at the cathedral for those who would like to express their thoughts and feelings about this very sad event for our city and our district.”

Coun Holmes had been mayor since May and was married to coun Janet Holmes.

Wakefield Council announced the town hall flag would be flown at half mast in his honour.
