A city centre street will be taken over by an eclectic summer market on Sunday.
Wood Street will be closed to traffic on Sunday as stallholders arrive to sell their products in a festival of food, music and the arts.
It will be the first Wood Street Market, a series of events launched to rejuvenate the street after businesses moved out and left shops empty.
Cooking demonstrations from nearby Iris restaurant and bread-making classes from the Yorkshire School of Baking will also be held at the markets, which will run from 10am-2pm.
Buskers and children’s entertainers will perform, and an exhibition of photographs from the old Wakefield Market will be on display at Victoria Chambers.
Wood street-based Architecture 1B, Woodhead Investments, Unique Wakefield and Wakefield Civic Society teamed up to launch the project, with support from Wakefield Council.
Architecture 1B’s Darren Bailey said: “We have got a massive mix of things going on this Sunday, and it promises to be a great event. We have stalls selling everything from sausages and pies to crafts and gifts of the very best quality, which is what we are striving for.”
Around 35 stallholders are expected at Sunday’s event, when a live illustrator will capture pictures of the market.
Markets will also be held on Wood Street on Sundays August 18 and September 15.
