A SAUSAGE named after Olympic champion Jessica Ennis has struck gold.

Ennis Champion Sausage – made by Hofmann’s of Wakefield – finished top of the podium in the heptathlon athlete’s home-town of Sheffield.

The thin pork sausage, based on Hofmann’s 100-year-old recipe, was top dog in the Yorkshire and Humberside competition for National Sausage Week.

Nigel Hofmann, 46, collected the trophy from Al Murray – the stand up comic and star of TV’s The Pub Landlord – at The Milestone gastro-pub in Sheffield yesterday (Monday).

Mr Hofmann said: “It was very appropriate with Jessica coming from Sheffield and the competition being judged in Sheffield. It all fell into place.

“Al said he’d tried all the sausages but he said ours stood out from the rest by far.”

It’s been a busy few days for the Hofmann family as they were also involved in Sunday’s Great Yorkshire Pork Pie, Sausage and Products Competition in Bradford on the eve of National Sausage Week.

They won the best thin pork sausages class and best speciality sausage for their pork and leek bangers. They were also runner up in the small pork pie class.

Mr Hofmann said: “We are highly delighted over how we did in Bradford and Sheffield. It’s good for our customers to know that we are consistent.”

Hofmann’s plan to put their gold and silver gongs on display at their shop on Westmorland Street in Wakefield city centre.
