A ROAD closure in the city centre will cause delays during ‘rush hour’ on Thursday.
Wood Street will be closed to all traffic from the Bond Street and Cliff Parade junction to the Chancery Lane junction from 5.30pm until 7pm.
The closure will enable Wakefield Hospice’s ‘Light up a Life’ service to take place.
The event, starting at 6pm, gives people an opportunity to honour a loved one who may have passed away or who is absent during the Christmas season.
Ian Thomson, service director for planning, transportation and highways, said: “I would encourage people to allow a little extra time for their journey through the city centre on Thursday evening.
“Diversions will be in place which will take traffic via Rishworth Street, Northgate and the Bull Ring and these will be clearly signed, however it is likely that traffic will be heavy from 5pm.”
Helen Knowles, director of fundraising for Wakefield Hospice, said: “The Light Up A Life appeal is always very special as it evokes so many treasured memories and it is an opportunity for the community to join together to remember a loved one.
“We apologise if the road closure causes disruption but hope drivers will understand the special meaning this service will have to so many people.”
