More than 1,000 rugby-mad youngsters will descend on Sandal RUFC for its annual festival on Sunday.

The club, off Milnthorpe Lane, are expecting teams from all over Yorkshire, Lancashire and as far afield as London.

The minis and juniors tournament kicks off at 10.30am on March 8 and is expected to conclude some time after 2pm.

Festival organiser and Sandal U12s head coach Adam Mounsey said: “We are expecting 1,000 children. Over the years Sandal has built up a reputation as being a very good festival.

“People want to come year after year and more and more teams are interested. We’ve been inundated this year.”

The event, which is a big fundraiser for the club, will also feature a barbecue with 1,000 pork sausages and 1,000 steak burgers kindly donated by Blacker Hall Farm Shop, of Branch Road, Calder Grove, Wakefield.

Mr Mounsey added: “The money we make from the barbecue makes up a big portion of the total funds on the day. Without them [Blacker Hall} it wouldn’t be the success that it is.”
