APOLOGIES: I must apologise for the absence of my column last week and to anyone who tried to contact me. I have been away on holiday. I am back now and would appreciate any news about the area to reach me by Monday evenings.
AUTUMN FAIR: An autumn fair will take place on Sunday, September 11 at St John’s Church Hall at Calder Grove at 2pm. Stalls include tombola, bric-a-brac, cake stall, book stall and refreshments. Admission £1.
BOWLS COMPETITION: Recently a bowls competition for the Greenkeeper’s Cup was organised by John Burton at the West Bretton bowling green. Teams competed in doubles matches and eventual winners were Eddie Morton and Derek Wolford. The cup was presented by club secretary Leonard Bartle.
GILBERT AND SULLIVAN CONCERT: A Gilbert and Sullivan concert at the Church in West Bretton last Sunday made a profit of £80 for church funds. The Wakefield Gilbert and Sullivan Society played a concert of light music including favourites from The Mikado, Trial by Jury, Yeomen of the Guard, Iolanthe, HMS Pinafore and The Gondoliers. Conductor was Jen Whittam and accompanist was Norman Walker. Rev David Hall gave a vote of thanks for an excellent afternoon’s music.
CHURCH IN WEST BRETTON: Last Sunday’s morning worship was conducted by Deacon Jane Paine. Lessons were read by Judith Brearton and Christine Robinson. Sidepsperson was Christie Robinson and Leonard Bartle was steward. Peter Bowers was organist. Church flowers were arranged by Joan Earnshaw. This Sunday is the day for the covenant service at 10.30am. This is held on the Sunday nearest the date for inauguration of the local ecumenical partnership in 1982.
PARISH COUNCIL: The September meeting of the West Bretton Parish Council will be held in the Village hall next Monday at 7.30pm. Residents are cordially invited to attend and to put their concerns to the Council during the allotted agenda item.
OVER 50S CLUB: Members of Bretton Over 50s Club had a lunch at the Hotel St Pierre at Newmillerdam last Wednesday, organised by Jean and Peter Bowers. The monthly social afternoon planned for Wednesday in the Vlllage Hall was changed to Thursday.
BRIGHT SPARKS: The mother, toddler and carer group resumes next Wednesday in the Church in West Bretton at 9.15am to 11.15am. Deacon Jane Paine leads the group.
AFTERNOON GET TOGETHER: There will be an afternoon get together in the Church in West Bretton next Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm for fun, chat and refreshment.
