WAKEFIELD ST MICHAEL’S CRICKET CLUB: The club is holding a car boot sale on Sunday at its ground from 7am to noon. Pitches cost £7 for cars and £10 for vans, no traders. The event is Wakefield Council approved.

HOSPICE: A dominoes evening, organised by the Lupset and Thornes Fundraising Group, will be held on Friday, August 12 at West Wakefield Methodist Church, from 7.30pm. Admission is 50p, plus 50p a game. The garden party at 128 Thornleigh Avenue on July 23 raised £500. Many thanks to all who supported the event.

WEST WAKEFIELD METHODIST CHURCH: Everyone is invited to the coffee morning at the church on Saturday from 10am to 11.30am. Coffee and biscuits cost 50p. Cakes, bric-a-brac, books etc, will be on sale. All proceeds are for the Methodist Fund for Britain. The service on Sunday at 10am will be all age worship, with members of the congregation taking part. There will be no evening service as the church will be joining with other Methodist churches in Wakefield for a circuit service at Trinity.

MAGNET, DEWSBURY ROAD: The Tracks are back by popular demand and will be appearing at The Magnet, Dewsbury Road (opposite Morrisons) tomorrow evening from 7.30pm. They will be supported by local band, Obvious Pseudonym.

CAR BOOT SALE: Friends of Clarence, Holmfield and Thornes Parks hold a car boot sale on the arena in Clarence Park on Sunday, August 14 from 7am. Pitches cost £8 for cars and £10 for vans.

COURSES AT ST GEORGE’S: A new free service is now available at St George’s. You can get help with finding work, preparing CVs, finding courses and careers advice. You also have free use of the internet for job search. Call in at St George’s Community Centre any Monday between 1pm and 4pm or ring for more details 369631. The centre is also taking enrolments for September courses.

RE-CONNECT: Bookings are now being taken for the annual charity dinner dance and auction which is to be held on Friday, September 23 at Holiday Inn, Wakefield. The Mayor and the new general manager of the Holiday Inn will be in attendance. Auction items already pledged include driving lessons, a minibus for a day and lots of Holiday Inn stays around the country. There will be a disco, band and a three-course meal, tickets cost £22. THORNES CRICKET CLUB: Last Saturday, batting first against Wrenthorpe, the league champions and current league leaders, Thornes first XI put on 180 runs, hard earned against a relentless bowling attack. The Wrenthorpe reply took them past this total for the loss of five wickets. The Thornes team remain in fourth position in the Premier Division, Central Yorkshire League. The second XI were without a game, but the club’s third XI (191-4) comfortably overtook Normanton St John’s score and remain the leaders out in front of Pontefract League 7. This coming weekend the first XI entertain Hunslet Nelson at the Field Lane ground, the second XI are away at East Ardsley firsts, and the third team are away to Pollington firsts.
