INCONSIDERATE DRIVERS: I do not know whether it is a case of petty rules taking precedent over kindness but there have been two cases on the buses that have annoyed me recently. Both involved ladies with pushchairs who were told to take the baby out of the pushchair and fold it up. In one case the pushchair was in a place designated for pushchairs and on neither occasion was the pushchair obstructing the aisle. I felt particularly sorry for the second lady as she was also looking after three other children. It would not have hurt anyone to leave the babies in the pushchairs and would have made life much easier for the ladies concerned.

DARBY & JOAN: Horbury Victoria Light Band entertained Middlestown Darby and Joan Club. The band is currently going round the area, to various events, raising money so it can compete in the British Championships in September at Cheltenham.

JOYCE HEMINGWAY: On July 19 Netherton and District WI decided nothing but the best was good enough for Joyce Hemingway’s 90th birthday. Joyce, a founder member, had thought the WI part of her birthday was over when she received a special card and bouquet at the friendship wvening, but she was wrong! A secret, but well-prepared, afternoon party was organised by her many fiends in the WI, masterminded by Evelyn Howard. The catering was special, even by WI standards. Many reminiscences were sparked by the archives and photographs of past WI events. Flowers were presented, photographs taken and there was singing after the cutting of the cake. President Ann Tomlinson presented Joyce with a silver WI brooch, which rounded off a super party, full of friendship and affection.

LIGHT LUNCH: Christmas in July, at St Andrew’s Church, proved to be very popular, with mulled wine, turkey, Christmas pudding and mince pies on the menu. The next lunch, on Friday, August 19, is a summer picnic.

NETHERTON OVER 50s: The club played host for the first time to Wakefield Movie Makers. Doreen and Lionel showed several films, all very different but interesting. The club’s birthday party is on August 17 at 1pm when a buffet will be served at Netherton Village Hall. Names are being taken for the autumn outing to Liverpool on September 28.

COFFEE MORNING: In aid of St Luke’s Church on Saturday, August 6 at 161 Sandy Lane, Middlestown from 11am to 3pm.
