MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING: The Ladies’ Group at West Wakefield Methodist Church, Thornes Road, invite you to their coffee morning tomorrow from 10am – 11.30am. There will be cakes, books, bric-a-brac, tombola, tea/coffee and biscuits. All money raised for Macmillan Cancer Support.

THORNES CRICKET CLUB: Thornes first team finished another successful season when they beat Birstall in their final match. Bowling stalwarts Scott Wightman and Matt Varley limited the visitors to a miserly 123, and Thornes hit these runs off to gain maximum points and consolidate a commendable fourth final Central Yorkshire Premier League position. The first team also topped the Stones Cup table for securing maximum points in the last six league fixtures. In form skipper Richard Foster finished second in the individual league table with 1018 runs. The second team have battled well in Division One, mostly against first teams, and they safely retained ninth in their league rankings. They certainly proved themselves to be the second strongest second team in the entire Central Yorkshire league. Thornes third team finished as Champions of Pontefract League 7 and well deserve promotion – congratulations to the team and evergreen skipper John Butterworth. The Club won a further trophy by beating Hunslet Nelson in the Mid-Yorkshire Sunday League play off final. Finally, the Club’s ever popular six-a-side all day charity competition in fancy dress on the Bank Holiday was a huge success and over £800 has been shared by Macmillan Cancer Support and Wakefield Hospice. Great organisation yet again by Joe Cook.

DINNER DANCE: Re-Connect, the charity supporting older people in the community, is holding its charity dinner, dance and auction on Friday, October 28 at Holiday Inn Leeds-Wakefield from 7pm – 1am.
