CHESS: The Huddersfield Handicap League began with an in-house match between Netherton and West Bretton. In a closely fought match that ended in a 3-3 draw, it was the West Bretton team that played better than its gradings and, with its 1 ½ points start on handicap, it gave West Bretton a 4 ½ – 3 handicap victory. The only winners were Chris Tinker for West Bretton and Paul Jackson for Netherton, while the games between Martin Sheard and Peter Shaw, Gary Hinchhcliffe and Nick Edwards, Granville Boot and Tony Gilpin, and John Gibbs and Ron Atkinson were all drawn.

TOP PLAYERS: In the top 25 Yorkshire Standard Play Grades, Peter Shaw (200) was ranked 12th and Jonathon Arnott (196) 18th. Peter was also ranked 9th in the Rapid Play grades with the same 200 grading. Francesca Fozard (142) was ranked 12th in the top Juniors. Barry Marshall was the third most improved Rapid Play competitor, improving 23 points to 186.

FIRST AID: Duties covered in September by the Netherton Division of Yorkshire Rose First Aid were a Service of Welcome for the new Aire and Calder Methodist Circuit at St Wilfrid’s Catholic High School and Sixth Form College, Featherstone, the Scarecrow Festival at Ossett, the Yorkshire Road Relay Championships at Leeds Metropolitan University, Wakefield Harriers Open Meeting at Thornes Stadium, Wakefield, Middlestown Gala and the Disport Senior Athletics meeting at the Keepmoat Stadium, Doncaster.

ART & CRAFT EXHIBITION: St Andrew’s Church, Netherton, is holding its very popular Art and Craft Exhibition on October 7 -9. Anyone wishing to enter paintings or crafts can obtain entry forms from Netherton Post Office or Earnshaw’s Fencing Centre. Entries will be accepted on Wednesday October 5 at St Andrew’s Church from 10am to 6pm. Sponsored by Earnshaw’s Fencing Centre, the Pre-view Night is Friday October 7, 7pm to 9pm, when the entrance fee is £2.50, which includes a glass of wine or a soft drink. The entrance fee for the other two days is £2 which includes tea / coffee and biscuits.

MIDDLESTOWN CHRISTMAS TREE: The lights will be switched on at 6pm on Wednesday November 30, and will coincide with Middlestown School Christmas Fair.

NETHERTON CHRISTMAS TREE: Netherton Trinity Methodist Church will this year join St Andrew’s Church for the Christmas tree lights switch on at 6pm on Thursday December 1. In attendance will be Netherton J & I School choir, Gawthorpe Youth Brass band and Santa Claus. Revd Lesley Ann Mattocks will lead the prayers and Andy Woodings the Community Singing.

LOCAL PREACHERS: Preachers for October at Trinity Methodist Church, Netherton are as follows - Sunday October 2, Dr Peter Muir; Sunday October 9, Deacon Margaret Hughes; Sunday October 16, Revd Tony Walton (Sacrament); and Sunday October 23, Paul Hayes. Those services start at 10.30am. On Sunday October 30 there is a United Service led by Tony Walton at St Andrew’s Church at 11am.
