A ghost of a tale with fine spirit

This is a lovely little book and a really light read. It's a kid's book and a short story written and cleverly put together by a really good writer with a great imagination.

This ghost story, which I can promise isn't remotely scary, is centred on Addlesbury Tower. It's haunted by a cantankerous character by the name of Rich King Cole – a mean old bloke who fell from the tower many years before under very mysterious circumstances; or was he pushed?

Rich King Cole is happy haunting the tower until one day along comes Amanda Philips who, from the day she was born has been a nasty little girl. She's also very greedy and spiteful.

Amanda frightens everyone she meets and most people try to avoid her, especially her own family.

Once Amanda decides she wants the tower she becomes determined to take control of it and so a battle with Cole ensues.

The book is split into three easy-to-read parts, aptly named the beginning, the middle and the end, and is a quick and simple read. It's pleasant and although it's for children it's well thought out and will interest grown-ups.

Gene Kemp has written a good few books. She's received many awards including the Carnegie Medal for The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler. She's written many things for TV and radio.

She is, of course, best known for her Cricklepit School stories, to which The Turbulent Term of Tyke Tiler belongs. She's a really talented writer and her stories captivate all who take the time to read them.
