A good read but could have been much better

Depending upon what mood I'm in depends on whether or not I'm a fan of Chris Ryan's.

This week I've been in a military book mood, so the flavour of the month is Ryan. Andy McNab is a good author, but he sometimes tends to describe a place and it appears that he may not have actually been there. Ryan, on the other hand, writes in a way that shows the readers his understanding of the place and as he describes the backdrop we get a real picture of it.

It has the same sort of feel to it as most of the other ex-SAS stories, the usual ex-military maverick who's retired and gets pulled back in for one last job. Our hero is Neil Slater. He's ex-regiment and he's approached by a group known as "The Cadre". They want Slater to get rid of enemies of the state. They want him to be an assassin.

Like his other books, he shows the hard side of a man with feelings, or the soft side of a hard man, whichever you prefer.

Improvisation and the ability to get out of a tight corner that might work in books but would probably leave you laid out in the real world can be found in the pages of this fast and violent novel.

Hit List starts off a little slow but picks up, once it does it really goes for it.

Ryan's books are always a good read and this is no exception, although I don't think it's his best so far and after reading every other book of his I think he could have done slightly better by using a character from one of his other books.
