Before I start, this is not the book that I expected it to be. I expected it to be yet another boring old SAS story, the type that have sprung up on every shelf in every bookshop since Bravo Two Zero was born, but it was a fantastic read from start to finish.
From the outset it pulled me in.
The book was a bit different to the rest of his novels and better for it in every way.
The book is based on the story of two brothers, Sam and Jacob Redman, both hard SAS soldiers to the bone.
Jacob is kicked out of the regiment and goes missing shortly after.
His brother Sam is on a dangerous mission in Afghanistan and upon his return he is charged with carrying out an even "dangerouser" mission.
It's not long in to the mission before he starts to think that his bosses aren't telling him the whole truth about this latest mission.
Sam is soon forced into making a choice between his regiment or his brother who is involved in the problem that he is sent to sort.
Without spoiling the obvious the whole thing kicks off and starts to unravel.
The story is fast paced and reads like none of Ryans' previous books and the action packed scenes that are explained as the brothers fight side by side are great.
It's well written and as well as the action it also pulls at your heart strings with realism throughout the book.
What at first I thought was just another SAS book turned out to be the best read of this genre that I've read in ages, this is the stuff that movies are made of.
And with the success of that thing last week that was on TV about that ex soldier bloke who was harder than Jack Bowers, this story, also by Ryan, is destined to explode onto our screens.
