HOLIDAYS: Last week I was away on holiday and am sorry so many messages arrived after I had departed. I was particularly sorry to miss the funerals of two good friends, Captain Alistair Hunter ( D Day veteran) and Bob Plummer (a great supporter on the Wakefield Harriers scene).

SANDAL CRICKET CLUB: The winning numbers in the July draw were 1st (£100) No 25 (lucky old Norm); 2nd (£50) No 45; 3rd (£25) No 16. The next draw will be held in pavilion on Saturday, August 27 at 8pm.

CRICKET MEMORIAL: The 11th annual match played by former members of WYCO and Wakefield City Cricket Club in memory of past colleagues, will take place at the West Yorkshire Sports Club ground, off Walton Lane, Sunday, August 7, at 2.30pm, after a short address by club president, Alan Crabtree.

TRINITY VETERANS: In the week before the great news came that Wakefield Wildcats are to be given a further three years in Super League, I was delighted to meet up with a pair of great Trinity wingers from the past. Jack Perry signed on in 1943 and proved to be a ‘great buy’. He told me after his first match at Leeds he took home his pay (15s) but enjoyed a long and happy career at Belle Vue before transfering to Batley. At the same time, I was thrilled to find John Etty with Jack. John had played with Jack at Batley before spending most of his career at Oldham, but Trinity signed him just in time for him to play in the great team that won the Challenge Cup at Wembley in 1960. Both men are even older than me, but seemed remarkably fit and well.

PROM AT THE CASTLE: About 900 people attended Proms at the Castle on Sunday afternoon; many bringing a picnic to enjoy while listening to the West Yorkshire Police Band. A fantastic afternoon of great music in glorious sunshine, the Friends of Sandal Castle were delighted with the event and very much appreciated the support given by the staff at the Castle’s visitors’ centre. Although a free event, money raised by a collection will go towards the band’s visit to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Twin Towers attack in September. The next Friends event is planned for September 10.
