Countdown to Christmas light switch ons

The first snow has fallen, the shops are stocked with seasonal goods and the yuletide adverts have commenced.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas - and things are about to get even more festive as decorative lights are turned on across the district.

Celebrations will take place in South Elmsall on Wednesday to mark the occasion. Market stalls and a craft fair will be held from noon. And the evening event kicks off from 4pm with a fairground rides happy hour.

Frickley Colliery Band will perform Christmas carols from 5pm until 6pm and the lights will then be turned on.

A free entertainment show will follow, and the festivities will finish with a fireworks displays at 7pm. There will also be a free buffet at the Westfield Centre from 5pm.

Town Council clerk Clare Baxter said: “It will be very family orientated and we hope all the community will come together to enjoy the event.”

It will be Hemsworth’s turn to sparkle when the town’s lights are turned on next Thursday.

There will be a festive market from 9.30am at Cross Hills precinct as well as craft stalls and games inside Bank Street.

Carol singers from Hemsworth Churches Together, St Helens J&I School, Kinsley Academy, Hemsworth Arts and Community Academy and Grove Lea J&I School will perform throughout the day.

The lights will be switched on at 6pm, followed by a performance from Altofts and Normanton Band in the community centre from 7.30pm.

The event is sponsored by Hemsworth Town Council, with support from Iceland, Home Bargains and Wakefield Council.

Ackworth’s Christmas lights will be turned on next Friday, November 25. A carol service led by Ackworth Churches Together will begin at 6pm in All Saints Church followed by the switch on celebrations.
