An undertaker was caught on CCTV stealing floral tributes from Pontefract Crematorium and hiding them in his hearse, a court heard.

Funeral director James McTigue was also filmed throwing down tribute cards prior to taking the cherished displays.

The 64-year-old, who works for his son’s firm McTigues in Savile Road, Castleford, admitted three separate thefts.

Magistrate Keith Leason blasted McTigue for his “despicable act”, which had added to the bereaved families’ grief.

His son Christopher McTigue, who runs the family business, told police he knew nothing about it.

James McTigue, of Savile Road, Castleford, told police his intention was to place them on a friend’s grave.

Paul Normandales, mitigating, said McTigue wanted to openly apologies for any distress caused.
