A man was attacked by the burglar he caught breaking into his shed in Lupset.
The 51-year-old victim sustained injuries to his face, shoulder and abdomen when he tried to detain the suspect at 4.15am on Saturday.
The burglar escaped by jumping over the garden fence of the house on Manor Haigh Road and into next door’s back garden.
Detective Inspector Lester Lee, of Wakefield CID, said: “This offence has occurred during the early hours but given that the man involved has made off through at least one other garden it may be that this has woken other residents.
“We are also keen to speak to anyone else driving or walking in the area who has seen someone matching the suspect’s description who may be able to provide information about his movements following this offence.”
The suspect is white, of slim build and more than 6ft tall.
He was wearing a black balaclava, a grey hooded top and white trainers.
Anyone with any information should contact Wakefield CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
