UPDATE: Evacuation zone increased after Normanton bomb scare

Police have increased the evacuation zone in Normanton after a ‘suspicious device’ was found in a supermarket car park.

They were called to the Co-op, on West Street, at 12.39pm today.

The shop was immediately evacuated and people living near by have also been told to leave their homes.

Police confirmed the following streets have been affected: King Street, Cambridge Street, Wakefield Road, Queen Street, Buckle Road, Exchange Street, West Street, Market Street, Church Lane, York Villas, Princess Street and Grove Street.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: “We are on site and working with the Ministry of Defence. Enquiries are on going.”

Wakefield Council has set up a rest centre for people who have been evacuated at Freeston Academy, on Favell Avenue.
