Pupils were left distraught after yobs trashed a play house at their school.

Vandals struck on Tuesday night at Newlands Primary school, on Wakefield Road, Normanton, leaving the playhouse beyond repair.

Headteacher Christine Carter said staff discovered the damage on Wednesday morning and the attack was captured on the school’s CCTV.

She said: “This is awful and senseless. We are going to have to take the play house down now.

“They have shattered the wood in the playhouse, leaving it full of wood shavings and nails.”

Mrs Carter said a muddy footprint was left on the window of the playhouse after one of the vandals tried to smash it.

Mrs Carter added: “They’ve tried to kick through one of the windows and ripped the felt off the roof, so we can’t use the play house store things any more.”

Insp David Bugg, of the Normanton and Featherstone neighbourhood police team (NPT), said: “This is just wanton damage at the school for no good reason.

“Our officers have been down there and enquiries are ongoing in relation to the investigation.

“We have also requested some increased patrols in the area.”

Insp Bugg said anyone with any information should contact police on 101 or e-mail the NPT on normanton@westyorkshire.pnn.police.uk
