The Whites led early through Chris Wood’s 12th goal of the season, but he later had a penalty saved by Allan McGregor and United were trailing to two first half injury-time goals before the Northern Irish winger came to the rescue.

Leeds boss Steve Evans made two changes to his starting line-up from the one that beat Wolves in midweek, bringing Liam Bridcutt back in for Luke Murphy in midfield and recalling Stuart Dallas in place of Lewie Coyle.

Lee Erwin kept his place on the left side of the attack, although he only made it to half-time when Jordan Botaka came on to have possibly his most effective 45 minutes in a Leeds shirt.

Hull threatened first with Chuba Akpom seeing a low shot deflected wide by Liam Cooper and then shooting straight at keeper Marco Silvestri from the edge of the area.

Tom Huddlestone shot wide from long range before United got forward for the first time with Sol Bamba getting on the end of a Charlie Taylor free-kick only to be unable to repeat his midweek heroics.

The next Leeds attack brought the opening goal as Taylor’s excellent left-wing cross found Wood unmarked in the box and he fired home from six yards out.

Hull came close to a quick reply as Akpom’s shot was well tipped over by Silvestri.

At the other end, Lewis Cook raced in from the right, but McGregor was out to deny him with appeals for a penalty waved away.

Harry Maguire hit a long range shot just wide as Hull pushed on again and Moses Odubajo saw an effort loop just over after taking a touch off Taylor.

The hosts did equalise as the game went into injury-time, Hernandez meeting a cross from former Leeds winger Robert Snodgrass to fire past Silvestri.

Hull then scored again before the break when Huddlestone beat Silvestri with a shot from 20 yards out.

After leading going into added time it was a big blow to the Whites, but they shrugged it off early in the second half as Taylor got forward from left-back and was brought down by Moses Odubajo to bring about a rare Leeds penalty.

Wood stepped up only to see his spot kick well saved by McGregor at full stretch to his left hand side.

Relieved Hull looked to capitalise when Hernandez got in a header that needed a great save by Silvestri to keep the game level.

Snodgrass went close twice and Akpom shot wide from distance as Hull got on top for a spell, but United dug in and threatened again when Wood’s header was saved by McGregor.

Leeds got the goal their efforts deserved three minutes from time when Botaka did well to set up Dallas who fired past McGregor’s right post to equalise.

United survived six minutes of added time to confirm their hard earned point against play-off bound opponents and they stay in 12th place in the Sky Bet Championship.
