The Ridings is asking for people to support independent retailers on Small Business Saturday.

The national campaign, which takes place tomorrow, aims to encourage people to shop local and support small independent businesses.

The centre houses 40 independent retailers including Created in Yorkshire, Feather’s Confectionery and Dickey Bow Boutique.

And manager Barbara Winston believes that these traders complement the larger national stores, by adding diversity and also breathing new life into the high street.

She said: “Smaller, independent retailers are very important to The Ridings alongside our popular anchor stores

“But retail is still tough and our smaller traders need a helping hand.

“We’ve helped a number of independent stores to get them up and running and feel passionately about supporting them where we can.”

Feather’s Confectionery, a family-run sweet shop that has been trading for more than 13 years, moved from the city’s market hall to an independent unit within the centre in 2013.

Carol Feather said: “We are a great example of how shopping local can support smaller retailers.

“We work closely with our customers to ensure that we have what they are looking for and are quick to respond to new trends and tastes.

“I would definitely encourage everyone to shop local – it’s certainly worth a look.”
