Firefighters from South Elmsall helping to tackle Sherburn-in-Elmet tyre blaze

Firefighters from South Elmsall are helping to tackle a huge blaze at a recycling plant in Sherburn-in-Elmet.

Up to 1,000 tonnes of tyres are alight at Newgen Recycling, between Leeds and York.

The West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, said 30 of its firefighters, including a crew from South Elmsall, are helping around 40 of their North Yorkshire colleagues at the scene. Police are also in attendance, together with representatives from the Environment Agency.

The fire broke out at 8.40am today. Nearby residents, schools and businesses have been advised to keep their doors and windows closed.
