THE city centre came to a standstill for the funeral of PC Mark Goodlad who died in the line of duty.
Hundreds of police officers, staff and well-wishers lined the streets as the funeral cortege made its way from West Yorkshire Police Headquarters, on Laburnum Road, to Wakefield Cathedral.
A service was conducted by the Rev Paul Wilcock, the Force Chaplain.
In a moving eulogy, the Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, Sir Norman Bettison, hailed PC Goodlad a “hero”.
And music was provided by the West Yorkshire Police Band.
PC Goodlad, 41, died after he was hit by a lorry as he helped a stranded motorist on the M1.
The incident happened on the hard shoulder of the motorway near to Crigglestone on Monday, October 24.
A 44-year-old man from Oldham was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and has been released on bail.
