YOUR chance to comment on plans to change the council tax benefit system is nearly up.
A consultation on Wakefield Council’s new scheme, which will come into place in April next year, ends on Friday.
The scheme, which is based on the principle that everybody will pay some tax regardless of their circumstances, has been proposed to replace the government’s current national scheme which will be scrapped as of April next year.
Coun Graham Stokes, Cabinet member with responsibility for council tax, said: “We are committed to protecting those most in need in our communities and will do all we can to make sure Wakefield’s local scheme is fair and recognises individual circumstances.
“We need your help to do this. Have your say during the consultation period, it is vitally important that we hear your views.”
The new rules being proposed for working age claimants also include all members of a household having to pay some tax.
The council has designed the scheme to encourage people to work, and has had to simplify it so that it does not add further to the council’s budget gap.
The consultation has been running since August.
