VOLUNTEERS are needed to help preserve the historical heritage of the Merrie City and to shape its future development.

Wakefield Civic Society has appealed for new members as some of its longest serving supporters step down later this year.

The society is set to carry out a review of its organisation before it marks its 50th anniversary in 2014.

Kevin Trickett, chairman, said: “The work is not onerous – it can even be fun – but, as a volunteer giving something to your local community, it can provide unique opportunities to develop your knowledge, expertise and insight while getting to know more about the city and surrounding area.

“Even if you cannot commit to joining the committee, there are other ways you can help. We need people to help with our review of planning applications, to help organise and run our events programme, and to participate in some of our practical projects.

“If you are interested in volunteering in any way, please do get in touch. Support and training can be provided as required.”
