HOCKEY pitches which will bring Olympic athletes to the city will be officially opened tomorrow.

Next month the Chinese hockey team, which will be based in Leeds, will use Wakefield Hockey Club’s stadium at College Grove for preparation ahead of the London Olympics.

The £800,000 new all-weather training pitches have been created to meet the standards expected by world class athletes.

And tomorrow the club will be holding its own Olympic-style party to celebrate.

Club member Pam Hughes said: “Former members from around the country and our many sponsors have been invited to the opening, thus making it a family weekend for young and old alike.

“Anyone who is interested in taking up the game, or restarting their playing career is welcome to come along to the club on Saturday.”

Junior members will carry their own version of the Olympic torch around the pitch before handing over to Harry Gration from BBC Look North, who will perform the official opening.

Celebrations start from 10.30am and continue in to the evening and Sunday.
