Plans to allow the demolition of the Wakefield Trinity Wildcats’ Rapid Solicitors stadium and to build 106 homes on the site were approved yesterday.
Developers The Tillion Partnership could also build garages, parking spaces and new access roads at the new estate, on Doncaster Road.
The Wildcats are moving to a new £19m community stadium at Newmarket Lane, in Stanley, which should be ready by 2015.
And developers have been looking to build on the Belle Vue site for about four years.
But planning permission previously granted in 2008 had run out because the team were still playing at the ground.
The new application was approved despite objections over traffic congestion, flooding risks and the number of empty properties already in the area.
The developers have been given three years to start work, and have been told to include flood protection measures.
