A SCHOOL is building a memorial garden in tribute to five of its former pupils.
Pupils at Horbury School wanted to pay tribute and remember their friends who had died or being killed during the past year.
The teenagers they will be remembering during a special service are former pupils Samantha Sykes, Kimberley Franks, Jenny Smith, Jessica Harris and Jack Clarke.
Headteacher Miriam Oakley said: “This is the opportunity for the students and staff at Horbury School to remember their friends who are no longer with us.
“The garden is a long-lasting memorial to these students and others who have passed away in recent years.”
A special service will be held in the memorial garden next month.
Murder victims Miss Sykes, 18, from Horbury, and Miss Frank, 17, from Eastmoor, were found dead in Miss Frank’s flat last month.
An 18-year-old asylum seeker, Ahmad Otak, has been charged over their deaths.
Miss Smith, 18, from Outwood, died on the same night when she fell from the top floor of the Chasley Hotel in the city centre.
And Jack Clarke, 18 from Horbury, will also be remembered in the school’s memorial.
He died in August last year after jumping from the roof of The Ridings Shopping Centre, just weeks before his A-level results got him his dream place at Manchester University.
Jessica Harris, 17 from Ossett, will also be remembered.
The former Gawthorpe May Queen died in a car crash last year.
The teenagers were all pupils at Horbury School at some time during their education, and current pupils wanted something to be done in their memory.
Trees and flowers will be planted by teachers and pupils in the garden, as well as memorial plaques that will be placed in the flower beds.
Two benches have already been donated by Wakefield Council.
Ms Oakley said the garden will be available as a place of tranquillity for any parent that has lost a child who was a former pupil.
The memorial service will take place at 3pm on Friday, May 18. Attendance is by appointment only by contacting Katy Stringer on 282750 or email@example.com field.sch.uk
