A MAN feared he would be blinded after being beaten by a gang of hooded thugs.

Dana Hamza Hama Marad was attacked on Tuesday afternoon on Westgate by three men who tried to steal his van.

The 29-year-old was about to drop off a delivery of new stock to his shop, International Food Store just after 5pm.

Three men, who all had hoods pulled over their heads, crept up on him from behind while he was about to get out of his van.

Mr Marad said: “They opened the door and they tried to take the keys out of the van’s ignition.

“They attacked me, they kicked and punched me. I couldn’t see out of one eye.”

“I held on to the keys and then all of them ran off.”

Other staff in the shop heard the disturbance and called the police.

Mr Marad was taken to Pinderfields Hospital where he received treatment for his injuries.

He may have to wait weeks until his injuries have healed enough for him to be able to drive again.

Detectives are now hunting for the metallic coloured Volvo saloon used by the thugs.

It was parked on the opposite side of Westgate, underneath the railway bridge and driven by a fourth man.

Witnesses said it sped off towards Quebec Street and then on to Garden Street.

The three suspects who attacked Mr Marad were all white, they were wearing dark clothing and distinctive white gloves.
