The city’s best-known hairdresser celebrated a landmark birthday with a ‘superb’ party last week.
Philips Hair Salon marked its 40th anniversary with a champagne and canape reception last Tuesday.
The salon was launched by Philip Dickinson on Providence Street in 1974, when a cut and finish cost just £1.10 and a roller set cost just 70p.
And four decades on, Philips has employed around 4,000 stylists and served an estimated 4.7m clients.
In 1985 it became the first hairdressers in the country to run a television commercial, with the now famous line: ‘if you’re not becoming to him, you should be coming to us.’
Mr Dickinson invited family, friends, industry colleagues and a number of loyal clients – who have been having their hair cut at the salon since it launched – to the event.
He said: “It was a superb day, it couldn’t have gone better.
“It was a great party atmosphere and everyone enjoyed the drinks.
“I was delighted with the celebration.”
