SPORT and leisure activities will be free across the city this weekend.

And people can take part in swimming , golf, canoeing and fitness classes, on Saturday and Sunday as part of Wakefield Council’s tribute to the achievements of Britain’s Olympic and Paralympic teams.

Badminton, five-a-side football, table tennis, squash and athletics are also included, at venues including Thornes Park Athletics Stadium, Pugneys Country Park, Lightwaves and all the district’s swimming pools.

Leader of Wakefield Council Coun Peter Box said: “The weekend of free sport will be Wakefield’s tribute to our Olympic and Paralympic athletes who truly have inspired a generation this summer.

“The success of the Olympics and Paralympics gives us all one of the greatest opportunities we will ever have to encourage people to take up sport and physical activity.

“Let’s make this weekend the platform for some of our young people to be part of Rio 2016, and show our Olympic and Paralympic heroes that their efforts and success have made their mark, heralding a new era of sport and physical activity in Wakefield.”

The offer applies to casual pay and play activities.

Parking charges still apply, but people doing watersports activities at Pugneys can have their parking refunded by taking a ticket at reception.

Some sessions will need to be pre-booked, and the offer does not include gyms, instructor-led sessions at Pugneys and pre-booked block sessions.
