Letter - GCSE students should get pass or fail

Have your say

THE furore over this year’s GCSE English results (Wakefield Express, August 31, page 9) prompts me to voice a long held view.

Why should the results of GCSE, AS and A2 exams take the form of a crude letter spanning a range of marks?

Would it not be more meaningful and transparent to give candidates percentage marks alongside the words “Pass” or “Fail”?

By definition this change would eliminate disputes about grade boundaries - and the top performers would know how close they had come to 100%!
