Letter - Wakefield Council has no control over business rates

IN response to Mr Ward’s letter in last week’s Express I want to make it clear to your readers that Wakefield, like every other council in the country, charges business rates based on the rateable value levels set by the Government.

We have no discretion to waive the amounts of rates or to reduce them because this is beyond our control. We also have no control over the majority of shops, which are privately owned.

I am very proud of what we are achieving in Wakefield city centre, which has been transformed in the last couple of years. We are working through the city centre partnership to continue these improvements and get businesses into empty shops as soon as possible. The increasing number of people coming into Wakefield show we are moving in the right direction.
