THE Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry was raised as the 51st of Foot in 1757. They became the 2nd Battalion of the Light Infantry in 1968 and they now serve as The Rifles.
This year is the 50th anniversary of the 1st Battalion, Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry’s departure from Pontefract for a three year tour of duty in Malaya and Borneo.
In 1961, the battalion left their historic home in Pontefract, marched to the station and travelled to Southampton where they boarded the troop ship Nevasa for the 28 day voyage to Singapore.
On August 6 2011, the 50th anniversary of the battalion’s departure is to be celebrated with a drum head service, a march past and band concert in the grounds of the Kings Croft Hotel, Pontefract, followed by a lunch.
The organising committee hope to gather as many former members of the regiment together as possible for this nostalgic last hurrah. Former soldiers will be coming from as far away as Canada, Australia and Europe and we are looking for veterans to come and join the celebration as it will be the last gathering of its kind.
The event will be followed in the evening by the annual Minden Day celebrations. For more details, phone me on 01924 252825 or email email@example.com.
