Having read Mr Box’s comments on the old market hall I feel I have to write in defence of my old workplace.
Yes it was a cold, draughty place – Lord knows the traders tried hard enough to get a decent heating system, but to no avail.
But to say the place was characterless is quite untrue. And as for Mr Box not being able to get what he wanted, well he obviously never called at the Asquith brothers’ stall where I worked for 28 years and where you could get anything from a block of carbolic soap and a tin of Jeyes fluid to an energy-saving light bulb and a golf brolly.
I wish Mr Box the joy of eBay. No doubt he can find everything he wants there, but without that personal touch.
