Footballers fear their club could fold if it does not get new players and coaches soon.

Alverthorpe Juniors FC has been nurturing young talent in the village for 20 years, playing in leagues across the district.

But numbers have dwindled during the past year and this season it is down to its final four teams, ranging from under eights to under 15s.

Dedicated parents and volunteers have rallied round to keep the pitches at Edward Sutch playing fields off Flanshaw Lane, Flanshaw, up to standard.

But they have a constant battle against dog walkers who allow their pets to foul on the fields and keeping the pitches up to scratch.

They are now concerned that if more volunteers and players do not sign up, future generations will miss out.

Club secretary Sarah Mellor said: “We desperately need coaches, managers and players to join our club.

“We have tried advertising in various ways, including using posters, flyers and Facebook, but still only an handful have signed up.

“We are having trouble with the condition of the pitches, their location and lack of facilities, which we have constantly asked for help.

“We pay for the pitches and more often than not are unable to play on them due to condition, also it is an area where people walk their dogs so you can understand what managers have to clean up before games and training.

“The message to put out there is that the club still exists and we are recruiting.”

Training is every Saturday.
