THERE has been something fishy happening in Kirkhamgate this week.

And its not just the fact 40 scarecrows have been secretly created in sheds and garages ahead of the village’s annual festival this weekend.

One business has gone all out to catch the imagination of residents by creating a straw stuffed Captain Birds Eye, along with replica fish finger.

The famous fisherman, which had the catch phrase “Only the best for the Captain’s table”, has been created by staff at Kirkhamgate Fisheries as this year’s scarecrow festival is on the theme of adverts.

And the Batley Road fish and chip shop will be changing its name to Captain’s Fisheries while it runs a competition to guess how much their giant fish finger weighs.

Owner Elaine Williamson, 50, said: “The whole village gets involved with the scarecrow festival and we love being part of it.

“Last year we made Ariel from The Little Mermaid for the theme of books.

“This year people can pay £1 to guess the weight of the fishfinger and money will go to local causes.”

The shop will also be making its own special real fish fingers, which will be added to their menu just for this weekend.

The festival will run from noon until 4pm tomorrow and Sunday, with maps of where to find the scarecrows available from the village hall.

Families will be able to vote for their top three, with prizes available for the winners.

Other scarecrows will include a tenor from the Go Compare adverts and Lynx’ fallen angels.

There will also be a music festival held at the Star Inn on Batley Road tomorrow night.
