Olympic torch bearer Tom Hacker – who has raised thousands of pounds for cancer charities – is tackling his biggest-ever challenge.

The 27-year-old from Horbury plans to run six marathons in six days in August to raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Support.

The 165 mile coast-to-coast challenge starts in Liverpool on Monday, August 11 and will cover a route through Manchester and Leeds to Hull.

He is aiming to raise £20,000 for the charity, which will be used to fund a new nursing role.

Mr Hacker said: “Running doesn’t come naturally to me. This is 100 per cent my biggest challenge yet.”

Mr Hacker, of Tyndale Avenue, lost his mum, Susan, to cancer 13 years ago. He has since gone on to raise nearly £30,000 for cancer charities in her memory.

In 2007 he walked 1,000 miles from John O’Groats to Lands End in 28 days and in 2011 cycled the same route in six days.

He said: “I’m doing this because I miss my mum and it makes me feel better. Cancer makes me sad for what I have lost and sad for all I may be yet to lose.

“Until I started training nine months ago I had never run a single marathon or half for that matter.”

In 2012 he was recognised for his charity work when he was selected to carry the Olympic torch on the leg between Lundwood and Barnsley.

He added: “My last event raised nearly £15,000 for Cancer Research UK.

“The fight is not just about finding a cure, it’s about helping the people who have cancer now, and that’s exactly what Macmillan do. They make sure no one has to fight cancer alone.”

Hayley Cooke, Macmillan Cancer Support’s fundraising manager, said: “We are absolutely blown away by Tom’s incredible commitment to this challenge and to raising vital funds for Macmillan.

“His drive and determination is quite simply inspirational.
