Celebrations as pupils find out A level grades

High schools and colleges were packed with pupils opening envelopes to find out their grades.

Cathedral Academy’s CAPA College said it achieved its best ever results.

Claire Nicholson, CAPA’s strategic director, said: “We are incredibly proud of the hard work, drive and focus of our student and staff team to achieve this fantastic success.”

Wakefield College’s overall A level pass rate hit 97 per cent for the third year running. And in 16 subjects, 100 per cent of pupils passed with an A* to E grade.

Principal Sam Wright said: “The results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students along with the high quality teaching and learning ethos that exists here at Wakefield College.”

At Ossett Academy, more than half of exam papers were marked A* to B and there was an overall rise in the top A and A* grades. A spokesman said: “We are absolutely delighted that the hard work and efforts of our students have paid dividends again, with students achieving excellent results.”

Outwood Academy also saw an increase in the top A* grades and said the majority of its students had secured places at university. Principal Sir Michael Wilkins said: “It is testament to the hard work of all students, their families, staff, the trust board and governors at Outwood Grange Academy that we have yet again performed so well.”

Silcoates head teacher Darryl Wideman said he was particularly proud the school had achieved its best ever percentage of top grades. He said: “Silcoates School is delighted to celebrate another impressive year of A Level success and we congratulate all our students for their many achievements.”

More than three quarters of all results at QEGS were A*-B grades and 19 boys achieved the top A and A* grades in all their subjects.

QEGS headteacher David Craig said: “These 100 boys are now off to a huge variety of exciting courses around the country’s most prestigious universities”

Headteacher Nina Gunson said:”The girls should be extremely proud of their results, which are a testament to all their hard work and perseverance and the dedication and expertise of their teachers.”

Wakefield Council’s Cabinet member for Children and Young People Coun Olivia Rowley congratulated the schools and colleges.

She said: “I hope everyone is proud of what they have achieved and are ready to take those next steps into work, training or higher education.”And said students who did not get the results they hoped for to contact their schools for further advice.

WGHS pupil Jess Trueman triumphed through difficult times to achieve top marks in her A-levels.

The Year 13 student was awarded two A* grades and two A grades despite battling with crippling spinal condition Scoliosis.

Three months ago, Jess underwent an operation at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

It resulted in her missing more than six weeks of schooling close to her exams.

Fiona Preston, Head of Sixth Form, said: “With great perseverance, Jess battled on, even sitting her exams in my chair in an attempt to make her as comfortable as possible. And what terrific results she achieved.”

Jess will now study Philosophy at Newcastle University. She was one of fourteen girls at WGHS who achieved the top A* and A grades in all of their subjects.

High achievers at neighbouring QEGS included Amol Vani and Benjamin Black, who both got four A*s, and Mahmoud El-Khatib, Joel Mitchel, Dan Mitchell-Garnett, Lewis Greenhalgh, Chang Kim and Tom Zarowski, who all got two or more A* grades.

There were double celebrations in the Ingram household yesterday as twins Matt and Laura, who attended Silcoates School, both secured places at university.

Laura achieved an A* grade in biology and A grades in chemistry and psychology, earning a place to study veterinary medicine at Liverpool University.

Matt was awarded A* grades in maths and further maths and an A in physics, securing a spot on the natural sciences degree course at Durham University.

High achievers at CAPA included Elliott Lee and John-William Watson who were both awarded four A* grades. At Outwood Grange Academy Claire Cotton, Travis Pearson, George Lord, Chris Leeson, Katherine Grubb, Lucy Robinson, Holly Bate and Ellis Garlick all achieved at least one A* grade.

And Wakefield College top achievers included Natalie Day, who got two A*s and an A, Anastasia Dennison who got an A and two Bs, and Grace Exley, who achieved four As.
