Community events mark 50 years of your library

South Elmsall Library celebrates 50 years of service to the community next month.

And a range of events will take place from July 2 to mark the milestone.

The Barnsley Road building reopened in July 2013 after a makeover which included new carpets, lighting, shelves and layout.

Wilf Benson, district councillor for South Kirkby, South Elmsall and Moorthorpe, said: “It’s an excellent library – well run with lovely people and friendly staff.

“I use it every Saturday morning for my surgeries and I get loads of people coming to see me.

“It’s well attended and we get loads of children there. The computers are bringing in people these days.

“It’s a mix of people coming to see their friends.

“I think they’ve done a grand job over the years.”

Celebrations kick off on Saturday with a family craft session from 10am to noon.

Work by local artist Richard Gardham will be on on show from Friday, July 8, alongside a nostalgic photography display of South Elmsall in its bygone era.

On Monday, July 11, the public can call in and meet friendly health trainers for advice and information on diet, exercise, blood pressure and also check their weight.

People can drop in for coffee and cake from during the same hours on Wednesday, July 13.

Local author Rachel Dove will be talking about her new book The Chic Boutique of Baker Street on Friday, July 15, between 10.30am-noon.

And on Saturday, July 16, to celebrate the launch of the library’s summer reading challenge – the Big Friendly Read – people can join in another free family craft session suitable for children of all ages.
