A man and a woman narrowly avoided being impaled by a tree during last night’s storms.
The tree blew down and struck their car as they travelled along Aberford Road in Rothwell, close to the M62 roundabout, at around 5.30pm.
Fire crews from Normanton and Hunslet were called to help free the driver and passenger.
Firefighter Neil Smithers from Normanton said: “A large branch landed on top of the car and went right through the windscreen.
“The people in the car managed to get out unhurt. They were extremely lucky.”
