THERE was not a bauble or a string of tinsel in sight when the Christmas decorations were put up at Nostell Priory.

A 20-strong team of volunteers helped staff get the National Trust property ready for the festive season in traditional Edwardian style yesterday.

Chris Blackburn, house and collections manager, said: “To invoke the spirit of Edwardian times, our team of volunteers have been busy making garlands, models and decorations as there would have been in the house at the turn of the century.

“Back then, shop-bought decorations were not as readily available as they are today so the family and servants would usually make them from beads and paper.

“We need every penny for conservation, so this home-made approach is more affordable, it brings us together, and is much more fun than buying expensive items off-the-shelf.”

The house will open to visitors on, Saturday, December 1, from 1pm to 4pm, and next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. For more information visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk./nostell
