Father Tom Kenny of English Martyrs - OBIT

Tributes have been paid to a priest who died after more than quarter of a century as a member of the priesthood.

Father Tom Kenny was 84 when he died last weekend.

He had been living on Dewsbury Road, in Lupset, where he had served as priest of English Martyrs Church until his retirement in 2008.

Father Tim Swinglehurst of St Austin’s Church said: “He was very passionate, he showed great generosity and great wisdom.

“He was a very strong character and a great example to us all. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.”

Fr Kenny was ordained at St Walburga’s, in Shipley.

His first appointment was to St Catherine’s, in Sheffield, where he remained until May 1960, when he was transferred to St Augustine’s parish in Leeds.

Five years later he moved to St John’s, in Normanton.

Fr Kenny’s first appointment as a parish priest was to St Paul’s, Grimethorpe, in 1971.

He then became parish priest of St Matthew’s, Bradford, in 1978 and in 1988 he moved to Wakefield as parish priest of English Martyrs.

A service will take place on Wednesday, May 7 at 7.30pm at English Martyrs Church followed by Mass.

The next day there will be a Requiem Mass, at noon, at Enlish Martyrs led by Rev Mgr John Wilson, followed by interment at Wakefield Cemetery.
