Thousands of gala-goers flocked to Ossett town centre last weekend for the 25th annual event.

Opened by Gawthorpe May Queen, Samantha Shelton, the gala featured performances from Westgate Cheerleaders, Liqui Dance, Yew Tree Youth Theatre, jazz and wind bands and line dancers.

The sun shone down over rows of charity, shopping and entertainment stalls that lined the precinct and people of all ages joined in the range of games and activities on offer.

Wakefield Geranium and Fuchsia Society also staged their 37th annual show in the main room of the town hall.

This year’s gala marked the end of an era for its dedicated committee, which organised the event in conjunction with Building Ossett Better.

They will now hand over the running of the gala to BOB.

Committee member and programme mananger, Graham Willis, said: “This year’s gala was another successful event.

“The weather was great, the charity stalls all did really well and thousands passed through during the day.

“It was a bit emotional in the afternoon, with it being the last one for the committee, some of whom have worked on the event for years.

“We were once again grateful to Ossett Tyre House for sponsoring the gala for the 11th year.”

It was also a milestone for current director of BOB, Mark Ellerker, who is resigning from the role after four years.

He said: “I will remain a BOB member and supporter, and look forward to working with everyone to continue improving the town. BOB highlights for me have nearly always involved bringing people together.”
